Myths, Machines, and Meaning: The Symbiosis of Anthropology, AI and Brand Mythology
How artificial intelligence is revolutionizing the creation and propagation of brand stories that resonate on a deep, archetypal level
In his groundbreaking book "Sapiens", Yuval Noah Harari argues that the ability to create and believe in shared myths is what sets humans apart from other species, and enables us to cooperate on a massive scale. As Harari notes,
"Large numbers of strangers can cooperate successfully by believing in common myths. Any large-scale human cooperation—whether a modern state, a medieval church, an ancient city or an archaic tribe—is rooted in common myths that exist only in people's collective imagination."

This insight struck a powerful chord, deep within my mind and soul.
Since childhood, I’ve been fascinated by the power of stories to shape human behavior, stir emotions, and drive action. Reading "Sapiens" was a profound experience that crystallized the parallels between Harari's ideas and my lifelong passion for brand strategy, storytelling, and emotional resonance.
At their core, the most successful and enduring brands are essentially shared myths—narratives that we collectively buy into, that shape our perceptions, tap into our deepest aspirations, and move us on a visceral level.
As Harari writes,
"Ever since the Cognitive Revolution, Sapiens have thus been living in a dual reality. On the one hand, the objective reality of rivers, trees and lions; and on the other hand, the imagined reality of gods, nations and corporations."
The brands that win our hearts and minds are the ones that excel at crafting compelling myths that bridge this gap between the real and the imagined.

Think about iconic brands like Nike or Apple.
Their power lies not just in their products, but in the archetypal narratives they've crafted. Nike embodies the Hero archetype, with its focus on empowerment, determination, and victory. Apple represents the Creator archetype, with its emphasis on innovation, individuality, and thinking differently. These archetypal myths resonate on a deep, unconscious level, tapping into our shared human experiences and desires.

But in our hyper-competitive and increasingly AI-driven world, how can brands elevate their mythmaking to truly resonate, and rise above the noise? How can we harness the power of archetypes—those universal symbols and stories that Jung argued are embedded in our collective unconscious—to create brand experiences that not only capture attention, but captivate, and forge enduring emotional bonds?
These are the questions that keep me up at night, and fuel my work with clients at BrandMultiplier, and which inspired me to write this series of articles exploring the intersection of "Sapiens," brand strategy, AI, and Jungian archetypes.
Over the coming weeks, we'll delve into how brands can leverage AI-powered insights to identify and tap into the archetypal narratives that most powerfully move their audiences.
We'll examine how iconic brands like Nike, Apple, and others have masterfully deployed archetypes to become modern myths in their own right.
And we'll walk through BrandMultiplier's own CRC (Collaborative, Rational, Creative) methodology for developing resonant, AI-enhanced brand strategies anchored in archetypal storytelling.
Whether you're a marketer, entrepreneur, or simply someone fascinated by the power of stories to shape our world, I invite you to join me on this journey…
Together, let's explore how we can integrate the timeless wisdom of "Sapiens" with the cutting-edge potential of AI to build brands that don't just stand out, but stand for something meaningful in the hearts and minds of those they serve.
That story, starts here—I hope you'll stay tuned for the chapters to come.
